The hidden cost of Dementia
We all think that we know what dementia does or can do to our brains but sadly there are other effects that are involved. Anyone suffering from dementia will experience so much more than the associated loss of speech, memory and ability to make judgments. There is a wider social cost to their lives as well. Whilst it is the fine work of those that give Dementia live in care that is greatly appreciated these are generally the only people that the sufferers see.
A lack of knowledge has given Dementia in all its forms a certain stigma. Just when the carers and the family of the person under the condition need the support of friends it disappears. There is a general sense by the sufferer that they are somewhat less than human.
It is as if they no longer matter anymore. This also puts huge stress on the friends and family that are left to care for the sufferer plus it is no easy task for the carers either. The problem is that it is an unpalatable truth that this illness, which can strike at any age and regardless of social position is still not openly discussed. It is the illness we would, ironically, rather forget about.
