How to make a Christmas pillow

It is the time of year when hanging tinsel and arranging baubles is sometimes simply not enough, but a new festive pillow? Yes, that will do it! Instead of trawling the shops to find the perfect cushion, why not get crafty and make one yourself? Even if you have never attempted anything like this before, there are ways of making your own Christmas pillow with such ease that you will soon find yourself wanting to make one for every room of the house. Let’s see how you can do it.

With the children

Children absolutely love Christmas, so what better way to keep the magic alive than by letting them help you? It may sound crazy at first, but wouldn’t the grandparents just love a present that the children have made themselves? It is even better if this is something they can actually use rather than a mix of tinsel, paint and glue that is supposed to be Santa.

All you need to do is find a plain pillow case and get out the paints. Done right, a footprint can make a reindeer’s head, whilst two handprints will make the antlers. Stick on some googly eyes and a red fingerprint for the nose, and you have a Rudolph pillow made by the children! Pair this with a handmade card or tree decoration and you are good to go!

To suit a theme

If you want to make a pillow to suit the décor of your room, you can easily make a pillow with suitable fabric. Stockists such as Higgs and Higgs supply cotton poplin fabric, meaning you can make your own pillow case from scratch or have some cotton poplin fabric to add to an existing pillow case.

For a no-sew option, you could draw a template of a festive shape or character onto card, which you can then use as a stencil to cut your shape out of fabric. Tartan fabric would be perfect to make a Christmas silhouette on a plain pillow case. You can then use an iron-on fabric tape to attach your fabric shape to the pillow, and there you have it – a festive pillow that you have made yourself. Try different patterns or even lettering once you get the hang of it and are feeling confident.
