San Diego Edition: Safe Activities You Can Do While Social Distancing
The need for social distancing has gone on longer than most people expected, and presently, there is no end in sight. While staying at home in some parts of the country may feel like being on house arrest, San Diego has a much brighter outlook. With near perfect temperatures, more sun than rain, and some of the most amazing natural attractions, San Diego has lots of safe activities you can enjoy during the pandemic. People flock here to take advantage of the land and sea, including the best whale watching San Diego and hiking along the canyons to the east. Here are some suggestions of ways to spend your time while physically distancing for your health.
Ride a Bike
Few cities offer the pathways and scenery for biking that San Diego does. For a complete 24-mile loop, hit the Bayshore Bikeway that goes around San Diego Bay. If that sounds too ambitious, stick to the Silver Strand Bikeway on Coronado Island, an almost 12-mile trail of flat, well-maintained land with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.
Do a Dive
Scuba diving is a guaranteed way to keep your distance; it even always requires a face mask! With the kelp forest near La Jolla, you have access to easy entry points and amazing underwater scenery. If scuba diving is too intense for you, try snorkeling instead for an equally impressive experience.
Hit a Ball
Stay on land and swing your clubs at some of the best golf courses in the country. The municipal course at Torrey Pines hosts international competitions along the coast, or you can go further inland to enjoy the beauty of the canyons at Barona Creek or Maderas. If you plan your game right, you may be able to see different types of whales in between holes right from the shore of those courses located near the water in Del Mar or Carlsbad.
Take a Tour
Speaking of whales, why not book a San Diego whale watching tour for another fabulous social distancing activity? With humpbacks, minkes, and dolphins near the coast all year long, you have a good shot at seeing these majestic sea creatures in the wild. Consider a sailing excursion or deep-sea fishing charter as other options to get fresh air away from the crowds.
Catch a Wave
San Diego boasts some of the best surfing beaches on the West Coast, and with several surfing schools nearby, both beginners and experienced surfers can keep their distance on the waves. Black’s Beach, Oceanside, and Windansea are all popular spots to hang ten.
Grab a Snack
With all those outdoor activities, you may work up quite an appetite. San Diego has got your back, with many restaurants offering outdoor seating and take-out. Avoid others by picking up some fresh fish tacos, a California burrito, or other local delicacy, and take it to Balboa Park, Coronado Island, or Presidio Park for an impromptu picnic.
When you are in San Diego, you have no shortage of places to go and things to see, all while steering clear from others during the pandemic. Take advantage of your luck and visit some of the attractions to take your mind off the pandemic and stay healthy at the same time.
